Many organisations focus too much on content creation and forget the true purpose of their training programmes: teaching employees new skills and behaviours that drive the business forward. This lack of focus renders many training programmes useless. The result: approximately €35 billion is lost each year on training, where employees learn nothing. Only 12% of employees who have completed a training actually use that knowledge afterwards.
“This lack of efficiency is mainly due to an overemphasis on the content of the training. At Stellar Labs, we use the GEAR method: guide, experiment, apply & retain. Many companies hardly pay attention to the last two steps”, explains Stella Collins, Chief Learning Officer of Stellar Labs.
It all comes down to the fact that after the training, the employee must apply the new knowledge in the workplace. In doing so, it is the organisation’s role to not only encourage this, but also to allow room for mistakes. The manager or coach must observe the employee and provide feedback. Additionally, the trainer should reinforce the key messages afterwards by asking additional questions or presenting a new problem.
AI can go further than creating content
For several years, Stellar Labs has had its own SaaS learning platform on which companies can organise training courses. “For the past eighteen months, we have even been using OpenAI to improve its efficiency”, says Stella Collins.
Consultants can now generate a training based on the company’s input even while talking to a client. “This allows the client to immediately see what the content would be and make quick adjustments to develop an ideal course. This speeds up the process enormously. Managers or employees can also suggest adjustments themselves based on the requirements of the workplace in order to respond to very individual needs”, says Stella Collins.
However, creating the content is not enough. “We can also use AI to develop exercises, invent scenarios, and conduct tests. This ensures that the knowledge is truly absorbed. In that way, the company collects additional data about the learning process, and the manager or employee can verify whether the new information has been fully understood and is being applied.”
Stella Collins will give a keynote presentation at LearnTech on October 4 in Antwerp.
